Most parents asking this are really asking something else: when will my child finish and start earning? So this guide answers both — the official minimum, and the timeline we actually see in our classrooms in Coimbatore, term by term.

Quick answer: Three years is the fastest realistic CMA course duration after Class 12 — Foundation, then Intermediate, then Final, with ICMAI exams held only in June and December. Once you add the 15-month practical training and the one repeated group most students have, three and a half to four years is the honest figure. Graduates skip Foundation and usually finish in two and a half to three years.

The three levels, and the fastest each can take

LevelPapersWho enters hereFastest realistic time
CMA Foundation4 (one group)Students after Class 12, any stream6 to 8 months
CMA Intermediate8 (Group I and Group II)Foundation-passed students, and graduates by direct entryAbout 12 months
CMA Final8 (Group III and Group IV)Students who have cleared both Intermediate groupsAbout 12 months

Those figures assume every group is cleared at the first attempt, which is the exception rather than the rule. Note also that ICMAI requires you to be registered for a level at least four months before the exam month — the registration cut-off is 31 January for the June term and 31 July for the December term. Your clock therefore starts earlier than most students expect, and a late registration silently pushes the first exam back by a full six months.

Why June and December control everything

ICMAI conducts exams twice a year, in June and December, and results come roughly two months after the exam. That one fact drives the whole timeline. Miss a group and you do not lose a few weeks — you lose six months, because the next attempt is a full term away. Only 23.93% cleared Intermediate Group I in the June 2026 exams (see our note on the CMA pass percentage), so in our CMA Intermediate coaching in Coimbatore batches one repeated group is normal, not a disgrace. Budget for it and the timeline stops feeling like failure.

The second thing the calendar decides is study rhythm. A term is about five and a half months of preparation, so every level is really a series of five-month sprints. Students who treat it that way — finish the portions in three months, spend the rest on past papers — are the ones who keep to the three-year figure.

A realistic term-by-term calendar

Here is how a Class 12 student who joins us in the June of their Class 12 results year typically moves, assuming one repeated group along the way. Read it as a plan, not a promise.

TermWhat happensWhere the student stands
Year 1, June to DecemberRegister for Foundation by 31 July; classes; Foundation exam in DecemberFoundation cleared (results in February)
Year 2, January to JuneRegister for Intermediate by 31 January; Group I classes; June examGroup I attempted; practical training registration can begin
Year 2, June to DecemberGroup II classes (and Group I again if needed); December examBoth Intermediate groups cleared by most students by here or the next term
Year 3, January to DecemberPractical training continues; Final Group III and Group IV across the two termsFinal cleared with one repeat allowed for
Year 4, first halfComplete the 15 months of practical training; apply for membershipCMA

Notice that the fourth year is mostly training, not classroom study. That is why the “four years” figure is misleading if it makes a family imagine four years of fees and no income.

Practical training runs alongside, not after

ICMAI requires 15 months of practical training before you can be admitted as a member. You can begin it once you are registered for Intermediate — you do not have to wait until both groups are cleared. Most of our students start training during Intermediate so it runs in parallel with study instead of adding fifteen months at the end. The students who take five years are almost always the ones who left training until after clearing Final. Our guide to CMA practical training explains the forms, the ICMAI stipend and how working students claim exemption.

Two ways to genuinely shorten it

A rule we apply at MPA: a full-time student with a clear five months ahead attempts both groups. A working professional or a final-year college student almost always does better clearing Group I properly, then Group II. We decide this with you after one honest conversation about your week, not your ambition.

Three things that quietly add a year

How long CMA takes for graduates and working professionals

A B.Com or BBA graduate who joins in January can realistically clear Intermediate by the December of the same year and Final by the December after that — two years of exams plus the training that overlaps them. Working professionals usually take one group per term, which adds two terms but keeps the salary flowing; many complete the qualification in three and a half years while holding a job. Our post on doing CMA while working full time sets out a week-by-week study load that has actually worked for our students.

So when will my child start earning?

Earlier than the final certificate suggests. Students who do practical training during Intermediate are already inside a company, earning the ICMAI stipend, well before they qualify. Many take a full-time role after clearing Intermediate and finish Final while working. The four-year figure is not four years of waiting — for most students it is eighteen months of pure study followed by two years of paid training and study combined. Our note on CMA salary in India gives the stage-by-stage picture.

Questions students and parents ask

Can CMA be completed in 2 years?

Only by a graduate who enters Intermediate directly, clears both groups of Intermediate and both groups of Final at the first attempt, and starts practical training the moment Intermediate registration is done. It happens, but it is the exception. Two and a half to three years is the realistic figure for graduates.

Can I do CMA along with my degree and finish both together?

Yes. A student who starts Foundation in the first year of B.Com can clear Intermediate by the final year and enter Final as a fresh graduate. The December exam clashes with most college semester exams, so plan the group strategy around it — see doing CMA along with B.Com.

Does the timeline change if the syllabus changes?

No. A new syllabus changes what you study, not how often exams are held. Students already registered are given transition terms under the old syllabus. See our note on CMA Syllabus 2026 before you delay joining because of a rumoured change.

How long does each CMA registration stay valid?

An Intermediate or Final registration is valid for seven years, so the timeline above uses a small fraction of it. The full rule, including what happens if it lapses, is in CMA registration validity.

The December 2026 time tables and the exam application form are linked on our CMA links page.
