You already have a job, a salary and about two free hours on a good evening — and you are wondering whether CMA will swallow all of it.
Quick answer: Yes, you can do CMA while working full time, and a large share of ICMAI students do exactly that. The course is built in groups of four papers, and nothing forces you to write both groups of a stage in the same term. Plan on 12 to 15 study hours a week, one group per exam term, and a total timeline roughly 50% longer than a full-time student takes.
Doing CMA while working full time: take one group at a time
CMA Intermediate has two groups of four papers each. So does CMA Final. ICMAI holds exams in two terms a year — June and December — and you may appear for a single group in a term.
That is the whole trick. One group per term is four papers in six months, which is manageable after office hours. A cleared group stays cleared forever, so slow progress is still permanent progress.
How many hours a week do you actually need?
About 90 minutes on a weekday and four to five hours on each weekend day. That works out to 12–15 hours a week, and it is enough for one group.
Below roughly 10 hours a week, one group per term stops being realistic and you start carrying papers forward. Be honest with yourself before you register, not two weeks before the exam.
A realistic timeline for a working student
| Stage | Full-time student | Working professional |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | 6–8 months | 8–10 months |
| Intermediate (both groups) | About 1 year | 1.5–2 years |
| Final (both groups) | About 1 year | 1.5–2 years |
Honest warning: many working students need two attempts at a group, especially the costing and financial management papers. That is normal, not failure. For the wider picture, see our note on how long the CMA course really takes.
What makes working students drop out
- Attempting both groups in the first term, then clearing neither.
- Studying without writing a single full paper under exam time.
- Not blocking office leave for the exam fortnight, well in advance.
- Missing the ICMAI exam form deadline — registration and the exam form are two separate steps, as we explain in registration vs exam form.
Worth checking: if your job is already in accounts, costing, audit or finance, ask ICMAI whether your employment counts towards the practical training requirement. Working students often miss this and end up arranging training they did not need.
Coaching or self-study?
If you are working, your scarcest resource is time, not information. Guided classes mainly save you from studying the wrong things in the wrong order. Whichever CMA institute in Tamil Nadu you choose, insist on recorded sessions, a fixed test schedule and a teacher you can message with a doubt at 10 PM.
