Failed a group, took a break, and now worried your CMA registration will run out? Here is how CMA registration validity and attempts actually work under ICMAI rules — with a worked example so you can calculate your own position tonight.
Quick answer: A CMA Intermediate or Final registration is valid for seven years from the date you register with ICMAI, and there is no fixed limit on the number of attempts within that period. If it lapses, you can apply for De Novo (fresh) registration and continue. Rules do get revised, so confirm the current position on icmai.in before you plan.

CMA registration validity: how long does it last?
Each stage of the Indian CMA course has its own registration. The clock starts on the date ICMAI registers you for that stage, not the date of your first exam and not the date you joined coaching. Remember that registration and the exam form are two different things — our guide on CMA registration vs exam form explains the difference, and it is the single most common confusion we clear up at admission time.
| Stage | Registration validity | Attempts inside that period |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | As per the current ICMAI rules — please confirm on icmai.in | Every June and December term you are eligible for |
| Intermediate | 7 years from the date of registration | No fixed limit — up to 14 terms |
| Final | 7 years from the date of registration | No fixed limit — up to 14 terms |
Work out your own expiry date
Open your ICMAI registration letter or the student portal and find the registration date. Add seven years. That is the last date on which your registration is valid, and the exam you write must fall inside it. A worked example:
Registered for Intermediate: 15 July 2024
Valid until: 14 July 2031
Terms available: December 2024 through June 2031 — fourteen exam terms in all.
What most students actually use: two to four of them.
Two practical points. First, a term counts whether or not you write it, so a skipped December is a term gone. Second, the expiry applies to the level, not the group — clearing Group I does not extend anything, and both groups must be cleared inside the same seven-year window.
Is there a limit on CMA attempts?
No fixed number. While your registration is valid, you can write in every June and December term. Seven years gives you up to 14 terms, which is plenty on paper.
The honest part: the real limit is not the rule, it is time, money and motivation. Many students need two attempts for at least one group, and each extra attempt means another exam fee and another six months. If you have already failed one group, read what happens after failing one group in CMA — the passed group stays passed, and you rewrite only the other one.
Paper exemptions live inside the same window
At Intermediate and Final, a paper in which you scored 60 or more while failing the group earns an exemption for later attempts. That exemption is tied to your registration, so it is only useful while the registration is valid. Students sometimes hold on to an exemption for years and then discover the registration around it has lapsed. The full rule is in CMA passing marks and exemptions.
What if my CMA registration expires?
You are not thrown out of the course. ICMAI allows De Novo registration, which lets you re-enrol and continue instead of starting CMA from zero. It is generally granted once, and it carries its own fee as per the current ICMAI notification. Whether your passed groups and exemptions carry forward depends on the rules at that time, so check with ICMAI’s Directorate of Studies before paying. If the syllabus has changed by then, you will write under the new syllabus.
Watch out: Registrations rarely expire because a student ran out of attempts. They expire because a one-term break after a bad result quietly became three or four years.
Four situations we see every year in Coimbatore
| Situation | What it means for validity | What we advise |
|---|---|---|
| Cleared Group I in 2022, stopped after a job offer | Registration still valid until 2029; Group I stays cleared | Return this term. One group is five months of evening study, not a restart. |
| Registered in 2019, never wrote an exam | Registration lapsed in 2026 | Apply for De Novo registration and confirm what carries forward before paying. |
| Two exemptions from 2023, group still not cleared | Exemptions valid only while the 2023 registration is | Write the remaining papers in the very next term; do not wait for a perfect term. |
| Final-year student registered provisionally for Intermediate | Seven years run from the provisional registration date | Submit the degree within ICMAI’s 18-month window so the registration converts to regular status. |
How to stay well inside the limit
- Note your registration date and the date it expires, and keep both where you will see them — on the first page of your study notes, not in an email.
- Fill the exam form every term you are eligible, even if you plan to write only one group. Missing the form is the most common way a term is lost.
- If you fail, restart preparation within a month. Momentum matters more than extra rest.
- Do not wait for the syllabus to change or for a “better” term. The term you are prepared for is the right term.
At Masters Professional Academy (MPA), a CMA coaching institute in Coimbatore, we regularly help students and parents from across Tamil Nadu work out where they stand — how much validity is left and a realistic plan to finish Intermediate and Final well before it runs out. Returning students join our CMA Intermediate batches for the one group they still need, not the whole course again.
Questions students and parents ask
Does the seven-year validity start from Foundation?
No. Each level carries its own registration and its own seven-year clock. Clearing Foundation and registering for Intermediate starts a fresh Intermediate registration.
If I clear Group I and then take two years off, is Group I still valid?
Yes, as long as your Intermediate registration itself has not expired. A cleared group does not lapse on its own — it lapses only with the registration around it.
Can I extend my CMA registration instead of applying De Novo?
ICMAI’s route for a lapsed registration is De Novo registration. Check the current fee and the carry-forward rules on icmai.in or with the Directorate of Studies before paying; they are revised from time to time.
How do I check my registration date?
It is on your ICMAI registration confirmation and on the student portal login. If you cannot find either, message us with your registration number and we will help you locate it.
The de-novo registration form and the student portal login are linked on our CMA links page.
