Parents ask us what the fee is. Students ask this one: how many hours a day should I study for CMA to actually clear it?
Quick answer
For CMA Foundation, 2 to 3 focused hours a day is enough. For one group of CMA Intermediate or Final, plan 3 to 4 hours a day across four to five months; for both groups together, 5 to 6. Add roughly two more hours a day in the last six weeks. But hours are the weaker half of the answer, because what you do inside them decides the result.
Why hours alone do not decide your result
Two students put in the same four hours. One reads the ICMAI module and highlights it; the other works sums with the book shut. Only the second one is preparing for the actual paper. CMA papers are written under time pressure, and reading cannot teach speed.
A fair split is 40 per cent on learning something new and 60 per cent on working problems and past questions with a timer running.
How many hours a day to study for CMA, by stage
| Stage and load | Normal day | Last 6 weeks |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation, all four papers | 2 to 3 hours | 4 hours |
| Intermediate, one group | 3 to 4 hours | 5 to 6 hours |
| Intermediate, both groups | 5 to 6 hours | 7 to 8 hours |
| Final, one group | 4 hours | 6 hours |
If you have started late, doubling the hours rarely works. Dropping to one group and clearing it properly almost always works better.
If you are working or doing B.Com alongside
Two hours on weekdays plus six to seven hours each on Saturday and Sunday comes to about 22 hours a week. That is enough for one group, not two. Most of our working students at Masters Professional Academy take one group per attempt and clear it, instead of attempting both and clearing neither.
Fix the slot rather than the intention. A 5 AM to 7 AM study block before work beats whenever I get time, which quietly becomes never.
The honest part
Very few students sustain six hours a day for five months, and you do not need to. Three solid hours every single day, with full answers written out and corrected by someone, beats nine hours on Sunday and nothing on Tuesday.
Keep the passing rule in view while you plan those hours: you need 40 marks in every paper and 50 per cent in the group aggregate. A paper you keep avoiding will sink the whole group, however many hours you pour into the others. Our note on CMA passing marks works through four marksheets that show exactly how that happens.
At Masters Professional Academy, Peelamedu, every CMA coaching batch in Coimbatore runs with a weekly test, so these hours get tested rather than just logged. For a worked example of how we lay out a timetable, see our 12-week CMA Foundation plan.
