Twelve weeks to go and the syllabus looks big? Here is how to prepare for CMA Foundation for the December 2026 exam without panic.
Quick answer
CMA Foundation is four multiple-choice papers of 100 marks each, with no negative marking. You need 40% in each paper and 50% overall. Twelve weeks is enough if you spend eight weeks covering all four papers, three weeks solving timed MCQs, and the last week revising — two to three focused hours a day.
What the CMA Foundation exam actually tests
The exam is on 13 December 2026, in two shifts on the same day, answered on OMR sheets. Paper 1 is Business Laws and Business Communication, Paper 2 is Financial and Cost Accounting, Paper 3 is Business Mathematics and Statistics, and Paper 4 is Business Economics and Management. Because there is no negative marking, never leave a question blank.
How to prepare for CMA Foundation in 12 weeks
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 – 4 | Accounting and Maths — the two scoring papers. Work every illustration by hand. |
| 5 – 8 | Law, Communication, Economics and Management. Short notes, key definitions, section numbers. |
| 9 – 11 | Timed MCQ practice — 100 questions in one sitting, then check every wrong answer. |
| 12 | Revision of your own notes and mistakes only. No new topics. |
Start with Accounting and Maths because they reward practice, and a strong score there protects your 50% aggregate if a theory paper goes badly.
Where Foundation students lose marks
Most students who fail Foundation do not fail for lack of intelligence. They fail on speed — MCQs look easy but the clock is tight — and on theory papers they left for the last week. Law and Economics feel simple until you face 50 close options. Read ICMAI’s own study material, and use the free MCQ practice on ICMAI’s learncma.in portal.
Tip: Only a normal calculator is allowed, not a scientific one. Practise Maths and Statistics sums on the same basic calculator you will carry into the hall.
Before you start: the exam form
Preparation is wasted if you miss the form. As per the current ICMAI notification, the Foundation exam form closes on 14 October 2026 (with a late fee after that) — please confirm on icmai.in. Registration and the exam form are two different steps; we explain the difference in CMA registration vs CMA exam form.
At Masters Professional Academy, our CMA Foundation batch in Coimbatore follows this same 12-week plan, with weekly MCQ tests. We also share short Foundation tips on the MPA Instagram and YouTube channels — the links are in the footer of this page.
Every Foundation download in one place — ICMAI study material for Papers 1 to 4, MCQ banks, practice test papers with answers and the June 2026 model and question papers — is on our CMA study material and question papers page.
