Somewhere in the middle of CMA Final, most students ask the same quiet question: after all this, will I always be working under somebody else?
Quick answer: No — you can practise on your own. Once you clear CMA Final and become a member of ICMAI, you can apply for a Certificate of Practice and start your own firm. Cost audit under the Companies Act can be signed only by a practising Cost Accountant, so it is work no other professional in India is allowed to take.
CMA practice in India: what you are actually allowed to do
A practising CMA is not limited to keeping books. ICMAI lists these as the main professional avenues:
- Cost audit under the Companies Act — reserved exclusively for practising Cost Accountants
- Internal audit, GST work, bank stock audit and cooperative society audit
- Certification work — cost of production, transportation cost, foreign trade and compliance certificates
- Representation before GST, income tax, customs and SEBI authorities
- Registered valuer, insolvency professional and arbitrator roles
You need a Certificate of Practice first
Clearing Final is not the finish line. You first apply for ICMAI membership, and then apply separately for a Certificate of Practice. A full-time Certificate of Practice and a full-time salaried job cannot be held together — you pick one. Membership and practice fees are revised from time to time, so confirm the current figures on icmai.in before you plan your money. Our CMA course fees breakdown covers the student-stage costs.
Should you start practice the day you qualify?
Honestly, usually not. Most CMAs with a strong practice spent three to five years first — in industry, or under an established practising CMA — learning how cost records are really maintained and quietly building a client network. Starting cold at 23 with no contacts is possible, but expect your first year or two to pay less than a job would. Compare it against the jobs available after CMA in India before you decide.
| Salaried job | Own practice | |
|---|---|---|
| First 2 years | Steady monthly income | Low and irregular |
| Risk | Low | High |
| Long-term ceiling | Depends on promotions | Depends on your client base |
| What it needs | A good result | Experience, contacts, patience |
Why Coimbatore is a sensible place to practise
Cost audit applicability is driven largely by manufacturing turnover — and Coimbatore is full of exactly those units: textiles, pumps and motors, foundries, auto components, engineering job work. A CMA practice in Tamil Nadu has real local demand instead of chasing clients in another state. Many students who come to Masters Professional Academy for CMA coaching in Coimbatore are from these very family businesses, and end up serving units like their own.
The short version: Practice is a real option, and cost audit is legally yours alone. Just do not rush in the day your result comes. Qualify, take the Certificate of Practice, earn three to five years of proper experience, then open your own firm.
