Every December term we meet students who “knew the answer” and still scored 9 out of 14. Ask to see their mock answer sheet and the reason is usually on the page: the final figure is right, but the examiner had to hunt for it through a wall of unlabelled numbers. With the CMA December 2026 exams a little under seven weeks away, this is the one skill that can still move a paper from 38 to 48.
Quick answer
CMA Intermediate and Final descriptive answers are marked step by step, not on the final figure alone. To score, write the question number in the margin, state the formula or legal provision first, show every working as a labelled note, present the answer in the proper format (statement, account or table), and finish with a one-line conclusion. For theory, use a heading, short numbered points and the section number or standard name. Practise this by hand in timed mocks from now until December — the knowledge is already there; the marks are lost in the presentation.
Why presentation matters more in CMA than it did in college
Under ICMAI’s Syllabus 2022, each Intermediate and Final paper carries 100 marks in a three-hour sitting: a compulsory objective section and a longer descriptive section in which you choose questions to answer. Coaching institutes generally describe the split as 30 marks objective and 70 marks descriptive, with a choice of five questions out of seven at 14 marks each — check the latest question papers on icmai.in for your own paper, because the exact structure can differ. Either way, roughly two-thirds of your marks depend on hand-written answers that a human examiner reads.
That examiner is working from a suggested answer and a marking scheme that allots marks to steps: the correct formula, the correct treatment of each item, the correct format and the final figure. A student who writes only the final figure can lose most of the step marks even when the figure is right. A student who shows the steps and makes one arithmetic slip usually keeps most of them. This is the biggest difference between a B.Com exam and a professional exam.
The five-part structure for a practical (sums) answer
| Part | What to write | Why it earns marks |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Label | Question number and sub-part in the left margin, exactly as printed, e.g. “Q.3 (a)”. | An unlabelled answer may not be matched to the question at all. |
| 2. Formula or basis | The formula, the standard or the rule you are applying, in one line before any numbers. | Formula marks are awarded even if the arithmetic later goes wrong. |
| 3. Working notes | Each intermediate calculation as a numbered note (W.N. 1, W.N. 2) below the main statement, and referred to by number inside it. | Working notes are where step marks sit. They also let the examiner follow a wrong figure to its source and award partial credit. |
| 4. Main statement | The answer in the prescribed format: a Cost Sheet, a Statement of Profit and Loss in Schedule III form, a ledger account with both sides, a computation of total income with heads of income. | Format marks are real, and the format itself reminds you of items you might otherwise forget. |
| 5. Conclusion | One sentence: “Hence, Option B should be accepted as it gives a higher NPV of ₹4,20,000.” Underline the final figure. | Decision-type questions carry marks for the decision, not just the numbers. |
Two habits make this faster in the hall. Draw the format first — the columns of the cost sheet, the two sides of the account — and fill numbers in afterwards. And write every rupee figure with Indian commas (₹12,50,000, not ₹1250000); it costs nothing and reads as professional.
How to write a theory or law answer
Business Laws and Ethics, Operations and Strategic Management, the auditing half of Corporate Accounting and Auditing, and at Final the Laws, Audit and Taxation papers are where students lose marks by writing a page of continuous prose. The examiner is looking for specific points, so give them in a form that is easy to tick.
- Start with a heading that repeats the key term in the question (“Doctrine of Indoor Management”, “Essentials of a valid contract”).
- Quote the authority. For law, the Act and section number; for audit, the relevant Standard; for cost accounting, the Cost Accounting Standard by number and name. Coaching answer keys consistently show that answers with the correct section number score higher than the same content without it. If you are not sure of the number, write the Act and the provision in words rather than guess a wrong section.
- Use short numbered points, one idea per point, roughly one point per mark available. A 7-mark question wants about six or seven distinct points, not three long paragraphs.
- For case-study questions, follow Provision – Application – Conclusion. State the rule, apply it to the facts given, then answer the question asked (“Therefore, Mr A cannot enforce the contract”).
- Leave a line between points and underline key words. White space helps the examiner, and an examiner who can find your points quickly is a generous examiner.
Managing three hours and the choice of questions
With 100 marks in 180 minutes, you have about 1.6 minutes per mark after allowing for reading. A 14-mark question deserves about 22 minutes; stop at 25 even if it is unfinished, write the final line, and move on. A blank question scores zero; a half-finished one with workings may score 7 or 8.
Attempt the objective section first, within about 30 minutes, because it covers the whole syllabus and every mark there is quick. Then choose your descriptive questions in the first five minutes of that section: pick the ones where you know the format, not merely the topic. Do your strongest question second, not first — the first answer is written while your nerves settle, and it should be a safe, familiar one. Keep the pass rule in view throughout: 40 in every paper and 50 per cent in the group, as explained in our note on CMA passing marks.
Presentation mistakes that cost marks
- Writing the final figure only. One number cannot earn step marks, and one wrong number earns nothing at all.
- Rough work on the question paper. Workings written on the question paper or on loose sheets are never seen by the examiner. Put them in the answer book as working notes.
- Answering more questions than asked. If the paper says any five of seven, a sixth answer is wasted time. Choose, and commit.
- Splitting one answer across the book. Finish Q.3 (a), (b) and (c) together. Starting (c) on page 14 after Q.5 confuses the marking and risks it being missed.
- Illegible handwriting at 4.30 PM. Speed drops and handwriting worsens in the last half hour. The only cure is timed hand-written mocks — typing or reading answers does not build it.
- Guessing a section number. A wrong section can cost the mark that the correct provision in words would have earned.
How to practise this before 10 December
Knowledge of these rules changes nothing on its own. Download the previous term’s question papers and ICMAI’s suggested answers from the students’ section of icmai.in, and from this week write one full question a day by hand, exactly in the format above, in 22 minutes. Compare your page with the suggested answer line by line: did you label the question, state the formula, number the working notes, use the format, write a conclusion? From mid-November, move to full three-hour papers in your actual exam slot — Intermediate is 2 PM to 5 PM and Final is 10 AM to 1 PM in the December 2026 timetable — following the week-by-week schedule in our seven-week revision plan.
This is also where the limit of pure self-study shows. You can check your final figure against a key, but you cannot easily see that your working notes were unlabelled or your law answer had no section — someone who marks professional papers has to tell you. That is the main thing a test batch adds, as we discussed in self study versus coaching. At Masters Professional Academy in Peelamedu, every mock paper in the December 2026 batches is corrected with marks shown against each step, so a student sees whether a 9 out of 14 was a knowledge gap or a presentation gap. Any CMA Intermediate or Final student in Coimbatore is welcome to bring us one hand-written answer and we will show you where the marks went.
